Webitu
With a name meaning “beautiful,” Webitu is just one of the many Ethiopian Jewish children living in the village of Gondar. At only five years old, she is a last remaining member of her family.
Abebe, Webitu’s father, was a Beta Yisrael Ethiopian Jew waiting to go to Israel for over 10 years. During this time, he was employed at a local dry food market to help load and unload the trucks. One day while Abebe was working, he fell and broke his right leg. Although he was taken to the local village clinic, nothing could be done to help him as his leg required higher medical attention. Unfortunately, Abebe did not have the funds to travel to a larger city to receive the urgently needed treatments. Immense infection grew in Abebe’s leg and after a month of suffering, he tragically passed away.
After Abebe’s passing 6 months ago, Webitu and her mother Alemitu have been left without any hope or help. When we first found Webitu, she was very sad, weak and desperately looking for food. When we asked Webitu where she lived, she showed us a home that was in ruins. With Webitu being the only child of Abebe, Alemitu is desperate to raise and provide for their only daughter. Unfortunately, since it was Abebe who was Jewish and not Alemitu, she has no hope to take Webitu to Israel.
Alemitu only askes for help in sending her daughter to the local school.
